Scripture Memorisation at Timaru Christian School

The following are a list of the memory verses for Timaru Christian School in sets for each level.  The first and last week of each term are set aside for a verse which is topical to the current unit of study, these will be chosen by the class teacher.  The topical verses are to be learnt in the first and last weeks of the term, therefore week 10 and 11 are only a guide, ie if a term is 11 weeks long the topical verses will be learnt in weeks 11 and 12 of the semester and the listed “week 12” verse will be learnt in week 10.

Level 1 & 2 (Years 0-4)

Week 1          Topical Verse

Level 3 (Year 5 and 6)

Week 1          Topical Verse

Week 2          Ephesians 2:8-9  For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

Week 3          2 Timothy 3:16-17  All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Week 4          1 Corinthians 10:13 (Contemporary English Version) You are tempted in the same way that everyone else is tempted. But God can be trusted not to let you be tempted too much, and he will show you how to escape from your temptations.

Week 5          Romans 10:9  That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Week 6          2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Week 7          John 10:10  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Week 8          Luke 9:23-24  Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

Week 9          Ephesians 4:31-32 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Week 13        Matthew 5:23-24  "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.

Week 14        Ephesians 4:29  Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Week 15        Philippians 2:3-4 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Week 16        Ephesians 6:1-3  Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise— "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."

Week 17        Genesis 4:7  If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."

Week 18        Matthew 6:33-34 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Week 19        Romans 6:22  But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.

Level 4 (Year 7 and 8)

Level 4 Verses comprise of 8 passages of scripture which are to be memorized over the eight terms a student is in year seven and eight.  On even years (i.e. 2008, 2010…) students will memorize the first four passages and in the odd years students will memorize the remaining four passages.

 

NB the first week of each term is set aside for a topical memory verse determined by the teacher according to the terms unit of study

Love

1If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind. Listening and Doing

19My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. 21Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.
